The EU directive on cross–border healthcare was passed in 2011. The directive grants a fundamental right to purchase healthcare services across the European Economic Area (EEA) for all EEA citizens, and the right to apply for reimbursement from their home system.
The event explored how you as a service provider can access the cross border directive to fund residential treatment in Ireland for your customers with addictions. The Safe Home programme presented their service focusing on accessing housing for older Irish–born wishing to be repatriated. We see this as an opportunity for a whole package of care, and we would welcome all service providers working with Irish people to come and join this discussion.
MAIN SPEAKERS WERE:
Oisín McConville – has won eleven Ulster titles and four All Irelands for club and county, picking up two All Stars and becoming the top scorer in Ulster football along the way. But off the pitch, winning has not been so easy. What started out as a hobby became an overwhelming obsession and as his debts mounted as his gambling addiction took hold.
Dr. Hugh Gallagher MB, MICGP – Addictions. He is a member of the National Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Implementation Committee, the National Methadone Protocol Implementation Committee and is also a member of a sub–committee of the National Advisory Committee on Drugs and Alcohol in Ireland.
Peter McCann – is an expert on cross–border EU Healthcare. After studying economics and psychology at Trinity College Dublin, and following a career in the City of London, Peter McCann established the Life Anew Trust in 1981. He is a founding member of the Smarmore Clinic in Ireland and will use this treatment centre as an example of a residential treatment Centre that can be accessed using the funds available through the EU directive.
Karen McHugh – is the CEO of Safe Home Ireland: Safe Home Programme has evolved from simply providing a housing option for older Irish–born emigrants. Alongside this role, they now provide an information and advisory service for anyone considering the move to Ireland, and they also provide support for those who have moved back and require assistance.
