Summer fitness with Cuimhne Champions

The East London Irish Pensioners final keep fit session before the summer ended in style, Cuimhne Champion Maev McDaid writes…

Back to all

The East London Irish Pensioners held their final ‘lively keep fit’ session before breaking up for the summer at Durning Hall, Forest Gate on Thursday 12 July. The class was led by fitness instructor Su Davis who works with a whole range of abilities.

Maev & Zibby

Irish in Britain volunteer and Cuimhne Champion Chris O’Reilly has ensured the classes have been open to all who want to attend.

Afterwards, I was lucky to grab a short chat with Chris and his passion for providing opportunities for the Irish in Britain was clear.

While the class was the last of this round of these sessions, Chris is aiming to get it back up and running in September.

The group once again saw lots of fun with chair–based stretching exercises, loosening joints and warming up muscles. Everyone who attended said they would love to come back!

At this session in particular, Su introduced stretching bands to help increase flexibility. In the group there are those who dance regularly and those with many years of varying expertise. However, it is still very manageable for people like me trying out exercising again after a very long time.

Su, as a qualified first aider, is great at making sure that the exercises are accessible for everyone. She takes into account any injuries or difficulties balancing or bending and stretching that people may have and works to your ability.

We are hoping to roll out this fitness programme again after the summer and would love to see you there!
