County Down – Contae an Dúin

Up for Down is Lloyd (Meadhbh) Houston, a non–binary trans academic, writer and activist originally from Holywood.

Dr Lloyd (Meadhbh) Houston is Banting Postdoctoral Fellow in English at the University of Alberta and Communications Officer for the British Association of Irish Studies. Their work explores the cultural politics of sexual health, queer history and culture, and the social history of medicine in Ireland.

Lloyd (Meadhbh) tells us about their hidden gem – the Bay Tree café, just off Holywood high street – and a more well–known spot – Castle Ward, a National Trust property used as a filming location in Game of Thrones.

They share an important call for greater inclusion and solidarity in both Ireland and the UK to ensure that the same rights, protections, and opportunities are afforded to all their citizens, regardless of their background or identity.
