Irish In Britain

The Brian Boru Club is one of the oldest Irish Clubs in the UK founded in 1889 by a group of Irish immigrants in Ashton–in–Makerfield. Its aims then were to help the Irish community and our elderly people and these are still our aims today.

Our weekly activities include :

Sunday night – adult ceili & set dancing under the supervision of a dancing instructor to live music.

Monday afternoon – movement to music with instruction every followed by a sing along.

Tuesday night – Irish step–dancing lessons for ages 6 years and above – Herring–Clarke School of Dancing

Thursday night – Music lessons on a variety of instruments for children & adults – Ashton–in–Makerfield branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann

Friday afternoon – Luncheon Club and sing–along with Mike Callaghan

Live Irish bands every Saturday night for all members.

Among the highlights of the year is our annual St Patrick’s Day Parade. This is a very colourful occasion with a pipe band and our dancers their traditional dresses. Our celebrant is our Chaplin Reverend Cannon MacNally from Louisburgh, County Mayo who celebrates our mass partly in Gaelic in the Club with us. This is then followed by a parade around the town centre lead by the pipe band. Entertainment and refreshment is provided for all the community and anyone else who participated in these celebrations.

The Brian Boru is affiliated to Lancashire Federation of Irish Democratic League of Great Britain (IDL) which is an umbrella organisation established in 1923, that draws together Irish clubs in Lancashire. Its mission is to promote and increase access to the diversity of Irish cultural experience.

Objectives of Organisation

To promotes the heritage of Ireland and celebrates the richness of Irish Culture through the provision of language, dancing and music regardless of age.
