The Peace Museum is honoured to be hosting ‘Everyday Objects Transformed by the Conflict’, an exhibition developed by Healing Through Remembering.
Healing Through Remembering is a member-led organisation, based in Belfast, working on how to deal with the legacy of the past as it relates to the conflict in and about Northern Ireland.
‘Everyday Objects Transformed by the Conflict’ brings together many views and experiences of the recent conflict in and about Northern Ireland. The Exhibition reveals both unique and everyday stories through a range of loaned objects and their accompanying labels, all written in the words of those who own them. It does not aim to agree on one single version of history but instead lets people from various backgrounds speak for themselves.
The Exhibition resulted from regular conversations between Healing Through Remembering members and collectors about the challenges involved in staging a shared exhibition of the conflict and how best to develop a process for such a project to happen/materialise.
Initially intended as a six-month project, the Exhibition has been kept on the road by popular demand, both from visitors and from collectors. Various versions have been shown in more than 50 venues in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and the Basque country since 2012. It has grown organically, with new objects displayed while others were returned to their collectors. Visitors to the Exhibition are invited to leave comments and many hundreds have done so over the life of the Exhibition – adding to the conversation about dealing with the past by leaving feedback, sharing stories and memories.
The Peace Museum hosting the exhibition will be the first time it is displayed in England. This is an opportunity to bring conversations around the legacies of conflict to local audiences and to develop a deeper understanding of these histories. Our supporting event programme hopes to generate further conversations around the themes of the exhibition and the concepts of how we display conflict for the purpose of peace.
