Our Cuimhne Coordinator Zibiah Loakthar writes:

Thank you to Fran Lakin and Pat Murphy from the Golden Shamrock Club and Nottingham Irish Centre for kindly hosting our Cuimhne training workshop in July 2019 and organising a delicious and healthy lunch for everyone.

Dr Mary Tilki and I had a wonderful day with lots of lively discussion and exchanging of experiences. The group raised lots of important questions for further discussion. For instance, sometimes when a person develops dementia s/he loses their sense of inhibition and may behave in a way that may seem quite out of character, for instance making comments that might seem rude and may cause other people, such as carers, hurt and offence.

As a group we discussed the best approaches to take in this kind of difficult situation. We also spent time thinking about practical steps that groups in Nottingham might take to promote support and wider community inclusion for people living with dementia, their families and carers.

For example, advertising “dementia friendly” events can encourage families to keep attending activities and know they are welcome. Making simple changes to signage in meeting spaces can really help people living with dementia to be able to navigate spaces independently. In addition, we talked about activities groups can offer to help people keep connected and keep brains active, helping delay the onset of dementia, for instance holding a card and board games afternoon.

Congratulations to Cath F, Cyril L, Fran L, Jan D, Joan R, Josie S, Mary M, Margaret B, Margaret G,  Nancy K, Pat K, Pat M and Susan S for successfully completing our Cuimhne training on Understanding Memory Loss and Dementia.

Participants fed back that they found the workshop “exciting” “stimulating” “informative” “rewarding” “entertaining” “useful”, “helpful”, “excellent”.

Our Cuimhne team is always pleased to hear from groups interested in hosting our training.  Please contact Zibiah by emailing champions@irishinbritain.org to express interest in us coming to run a workshop for your group.
