Posters promoting the event were distributed weeks in advance through churches and community networks, helping to attract a diverse crowd of 51 attendees, aged between 45 and 92.

Held on the 20 June, the event brought together a wide range of local health services – from dental care and smoking cessation to bowel cancer awareness, vaccinations and fitness.

Key partners included Well Newham, the NHS, The Footworks Social, Better GLL and Spotlight Health.

Nurse Bronagh Donnelly from Spotlight Health shared vital information on prostate cancer, while Thomas McCurtains GAA led a spirited handball demonstration that got people on their feet and sparked nostalgic energy in the room.

The day also featured a series of informative talks:

  • Spotlight Care on prostate cancer

  • Thomas McCurtains GAA handball demo

  • NHS presentation on bowel cancer

  • The Footworks Social on footcare

  • Better leading a 10-minute group fitness session to end the day

One of the busiest stalls was footcare, where many women expressed how difficult it is to access regular foot health services locally.

The event closed on a high note with a fun group fitness session, filling the room with laughter and a real sense of community spirit.

Some attendee feedback included:

"Very good."

"Learned a lot from very experienced experts."

"Made me think about my son's health."

The overwhelmingly positive feedback and enthusiastic participation highlighted the value of events like these. The suggestions given for future topics — particularly diabetes, heart health, and mobility — will help shape future outreach to support this community’s health needs.

  • We would like to thank all the organisations and individuals who contributed to making this event a success, including Newham Council, Well Newham, Spotlight Health, Thomas McCurtains GAA, Spotlight Health, Better GLL, The Footworks Social, and all the volunteers and attendees.
