Pilotlight connects charities to strategic business support to help them develop their capabilities. Support is available for long–term holistic overhauls or for short–term project–specific needs. The programme is free of charge and open for applications until 3 August.
Report on Local Charities in London
The Think Tank Centre for London recently published a report titled “Hot spots , Cold Spots: What’s happening to local charities?” in which they examined sector trends in the capital. Despite an increase in the number of charities in London compared to the rest of the UK, the report found a significant decline in the number of charities focussed on local causes in the city. The study also found that the distribution of charities in the capital was extremely uneven, with outer boroughs demonstrating a significant lack.
New Cabinet Minister Responsible for Charity Sector
Following the move of Matt Hancock in the wake of several high–level cabinet departures, Jeremy Wright has been selected as the new secretary of state for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. Wright is perhaps best known in the charity sector for his decision as Attorney General to shut down the National Fund, a £475M fund originally set up to pay down the national debt, arguing that the funds should go to government rather than remaining in the sector as many had hoped.
Why We Should Treat Lived Experience as an Asset, Not a Risk

New Rules on Giftaid
Following a public consultation in 2016, the Government has recently published details of its plan to simplify the rules around how much benefit charities can provide to donors and still claim gift aid. The new rules will be significantly simpler and will increase the benefit that charities can provide. The new rules are set to go into effect next year.
New Web Portal
A new web portal, whatcharity, has launched to provide online access to all publicly available information on charities. The project is an attempt to amalgamate the information available on multiple Charity Commission platforms in one easy accessible place.
