County Donegal – Contae Dhún na nGall

Merseyside’s Breege McDaid represents her home county of Donegal.

Breege McDaid is director of Irish Community Care, which works with Irish and Irish Traveller people in Liverpool and across northwest England, and hails originally from Buncrana on the Inishowen peninsula in Donegal. She is a recipient of the Presidential Distinguished Service Award.

She says that while St Patrick’s Day is a time for celebration and connectivity, we must not forget our duty of care to the wider community and those in need. Irish Community Care recently adopted the salmon as its logo – ‘symbolic of the challenging journey of emigration’ – as many Irish and Traveller people experience difficulties.

Breege’s favourite thing to do in her county is the walk along the shore of Lough Swilly from Buncrana up to Stragill. Whatever the weather – sunny or cold and blustery – there are stunning views and it is uplifting and invigorating.
