I started my career in the community sector in 2007 as a volunteer in a local charity, I then secured funding and was employed by them. I moved on to become CEO of Three Consulting Ltd, an organisation which offered support to schools and community organisations.
I started my own company “Supporting Locally Ltd” in 2011. I have provided services, mainly to the Irish Community, which have included business planning, funding, training, organisational development and other associated issues.
Funding has ranged from small amounts to £500,000, I have assisted formation and registering of charities, run funding training and community centre development plans for local authorities, assisted with restructure and ongoing sustainability etc.
When I got involved in the world of community activities and funding in 2007, the terms and names people used were bewildering, it was all a bit confusing at first.
I have since then built my skills and understanding supporting a large variety of projects to deal with issues in their locality or their activities.
I have learned that the solution to most problems which arise lie within the group itself, I see my role as a facilitator. This means helping to identify problems, co–working with the organisation to plan solutions, and the taking the action required.
This could be a business plan, funding applications, restructuring staff and activities etc. All support starts with a meeting with the management committee, this ensures any programme is based around the needs of the organisation.
Any work is agreed in advance and I am passionate about learning and sharing, organisations should have greater skills and capabilities than when support started.
