The Association of Mixed Race Irish (AMRI) was set up to raise awareness about Irish people of mixed race backgrounds and to seek recognition for them as full members of Irish society.
Many have suffered from racism while growing up in Ireland, in particular those who were resident in industrial schools throughout Ireland. They have often felt excluded from notions of Irish identity because of their colour and made to feel like foreigners in their own country. This has resulted in chronic health and welfare problems for many. AMRI are working to identify this vulnerable group and to address and assist with some of their health and welfare needs.
We are also working to project positive images of black and mixed race Irish people and to bring this scattered community together for support and to develop a stronger voice. This will result in more recognition of our community within Irish society.
The work we have carried out in the recent past has involved searching for missing mixed race people and connecting them together with this small community. Advocacy work and lobbying government ministers and TD in the Irish parliament about racism affecting mixed race Irish people. We have presented our case to the Justice and Equality Committee in the Dail and for the first time in history we also managed to convince the Irish Government to include the word “race” within the terms of reference for any Investigation into institutional abuse, that included in the terms of reference for the Investigation in Mother & Baby Homes, currently in progress. We are working with this Commission along with our members on fact finding and providing evidence and histories.
