The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect on the 25 May 2018 and has required a huge shift in how personal data is handled.

With the new regulations came a tightening of restrictions on how personal data is collected, held and used. In addition to a change in the rules, the new regulations also brought a significant escalation in the penalties associated with a violation.

It is unlikely that any issue from a small organisation will draw a significant penalty, but it is important to know what GDPR changed and how you should be handling any personal data you collect. Irish in Britain created a walk–through document for members before GDPR came into effect and the website resources also address many specific and difficult elements of the legislation. If you have any questions about GDPR, we recommend you review our resources or contact our member support officer at if you cannot find the answer to your question.
