Policy

FIS is the only national organisation representing Irish people in areas of social policy which directly affect the community across Britain. Drawing on the direct experiences of the community through research, consultation, themed forums and events we aim to inform and influence key decisions at a national, regional and local level. We raise awareness of the specific needs of the community and propose evidence-based ways of addressing them.

Our work entails a range of activities designed to improve the experiences and opportunities of the community in Britain. Our policy work includes:

  • Responding to government consultations
  • Publishing research
  • Representing the community at policy-related and strategic forums
  • Communicating directly with relevant decision-makers

FIS values and promotes the positive impact of partnerships between Irish community/cultural services and the statutory and third sector. We and our members work closely with mainstream providers such as the NHS assisting them in their efforts to better understand and meet the health and social care needs of the community.

Current Key policy areas:

  • Health and Welfare
  • Equalities
  • Community
  • Parliamentary engagement

These areas reflect what our members have told us are important to them, but if you have a national or local policy issue you would like to discuss with us please get in touch. If you would like further information about FIS's policy team please contact Seán Hutton 020 7833 1226.

Response to consultations

FIS makes regular submissions to government consultations at a national and regional level. Our submissions are all evidence based drawing on direct feedback from our members and from the wider community

Policy E-Briefings

Our policy e-briefings provide a practical breakdown of current policy which affects the environment in which our member organisations operate. If you would like to receive the policy briefing please register with Sean Hutton: shutton@irishinbritain.org

Research

FIS undertakes a range of research and mapping exercises into different aspects of the Irish community. Often working in partnership with the NHS or academic institutions, we aim to provide up to date evidence based knowledge on the specific needs of the community and how our member organisations respond to these needs. We support our members to draw upon and to share models of best practice in working with the more vulnerable in our community.

If you would like to discuss a potential research project you would like us to undertake or feed into please contact Rita Corrigan on 0121 622 4169
